Local Pick Up Only

Local Pick Up Only covers the pieces that are too heavy, too long or too awkward to put through a carrier without risking them: benches, stools and larger timber furniture. Nothing in this collection ships. You are welcome to arrange your own freight if you would rather, but the default is that you come and collect, and we will help you load.

The upside of collecting in person is that you get to look first. With old elm that matters more than with anything else we sell. Every plank has moved a little since it was cut, every seat has cupped toward whoever sat on it, and photographs flatten exactly the qualities that make a piece worth having. Run a hand along the top, look at the underside for tool marks, check the wedges in the leg tenons.

Appointments are easy to arrange and there is no pressure attached to them: plenty of people come, look at three benches and go home with none, and that is a perfectly good outcome. Use the contact page to suggest a time, or catch us at one of the fairs listed on the show schedule, where the larger pieces usually travel too.

Practically, collection means the warehouse near Sacramento by appointment, or one of the fairs on the show schedule if the piece is travelling that month. Appointments are usually same-week and there is no minimum spend attached to them; people come to look at benches and leave with a bowl, or with nothing, and that is fine.

If you are set on a piece but cannot collect it, we will happily release it to a courier you arrange, and we will pack and load it for them. What we will not do is book blanket freight ourselves for furniture of this weight, because we cannot stand behind the handling once it leaves — and with a hundred-year-old elm bench, handling is the whole risk.
