About the Hand Carved Bowls

A dough bowl is a shape that came from a single requirement: turn a bread dough of six or seven pounds without it climbing out. The answer everywhere from the Carpathians to the Appalachians was the same — hollow a shallow, wide trough from one piece of softwood, leave the walls thick at the base and thin at the rim, and let the outside keep the marks of the gouge. That is why an honest carved bowl is never symmetrical and never should be.

These are carved from pine, which is light in the hand and warm in colour, and finished only as far as the tools took them. Run a palm across the inside and you can feel the scoop of the blade; the ridges are shallow and regular and they catch light along the length of the bowl. Sun and air have taken the raw yellow out of the wood and left a soft honeyed grey that no stain reproduces convincingly.

Treat them as decorative rather than food-safe: they were never sealed and the old surfaces have absorbed whatever they stood in. They are excellent for fruit that does not weep, for pine cones or kindling, for a run of pillar candles down a table, or simply empty on a sideboard where the shape can be read. Keep them away from radiators and never wash them — a dry cloth and, once a year, a very light paste wax is the whole regime.

Bowls vary by an inch or two in every direction, so where the size matters — a specific shelf, a particular table — ask us to measure the actual piece before you order rather than working from the listing.
