About the Mini Elm Wood Stools

Mini elm stools began life as genuine furniture — low seats for children, for milking, for sitting close to a fire — before they became the thing everyone puts a plant on. The construction is the same at any size: a solid slab seat, three or four legs driven into tapered sockets from above, and a wedge in each tenon to lock it. No glue, no screws, no bracing.

Elm is the reason they survive. The interlocking grain lets the seat cup gently over decades without splitting, and the same grain grips a driven leg far better than a straight-grained timber would. Turn one over and you can usually see the wedges, the drawknife marks on the underside of the seat, and the darker ring where a leg has been re-driven at some point.

At this height they do several jobs at once: side table beside a low chair, plant stand where a pot needs lifting out of a shadow, or a step for reaching a high shelf, which is what most of them were doing when we found them. Wax once a year and buff back. Check the wedges annually and replace any that have dropped out, in oak, never in glue.

Stool heights vary by an inch or so and the seats vary more than that, so if you are buying to fit beside a specific chair it is worth asking for the actual measurements of the piece in stock. We can also hold two or three back so you can choose. They ship well, though a stool is heavier than it looks and postage reflects that.

These stools came out of northern China and Korea in large numbers through the second half of the twentieth century, and the imported ones vary in age far more than sellers usually admit — a batch can hold pieces sixty years apart. We date by construction rather than by finish: hand-cut wedges, an uneven splay to the legs and drawknife marks on the underside of the seat all point to genuine age, while machine-round legs and a uniform stain do not.
