About the European Olive Buckets

Across the olive-growing belt of Turkey and the eastern Mediterranean, harvest buckets were made locally from sheet steel, riveted rather than welded, and sized so that a full one could still be lifted onto a cart by one person. They were used for picking, for washing the fruit, and afterwards for anything else that needed carrying, which is why the surviving examples are dented in every direction at once.

The proportions are what set them apart from a farm bucket: taller than they are wide, with a straight side and a heavy rolled rim, and a single swing handle that sits close to the body. That verticality is useful indoors. They take a tall arrangement without looking top-heavy, they hold rolled towels neatly, and a pair either side of a fireplace does more work than a much larger basket would.

Most retain traces of the original paint, usually a faded blue or green, over bare or lightly galvanised steel. Leave it. Wash with warm water, dry properly, and if the interior shows active rust, seal it with a clear lacquer or simply drop a liner inside. Standing water is the only real enemy; everything else these buckets have already survived.
