About the Turkey Feeder - 2 Piece

Poultry feeders were built to a brief that had nothing to do with looks: cheap to make, impossible to tip over, easy to fill and impossible for a bird to stand in. The result was a heavy galvanised trough with a rolled edge and a perforated top, and the shape has an accidental elegance that has kept these things in demand long after the last flock went.

This is the two-piece pattern — a base and a lift-off top — which makes it far more useful indoors than the sealed versions. Take the top off and you have a shallow trough for logs, pine cones, or a run of low plants. Leave it on and the openings hold pillar candles at exactly the right spacing, which is the use most people end up settling on.

The galvanising is usually intact under the dirt, so a warm wash and a soft brush brings back a good deal of the original silver-grey without touching the character. Avoid wire brushing, which strips the zinc and starts rust. If you plan to plant into the base, drill two drainage holes and stand it on feet; standing water is the only thing that will finish it off.

Feeders come in from farm clearances in twos and threes and go out just as quickly, usually to people who have seen one used as a candle trough somewhere. If you want a matched pair for a hearth, ask and we will set them aside together. They ship flat once the top is lifted off, which keeps the cost sensible even at this size.
