Table-top wine presses like this one were a household tool across central Europe, not a piece of commercial equipment. A family with a few rows of vines pressed their own each September, and the press lived in a cellar or a lean-to for the other eleven months of the year. The scale gives it away: a full-size commercial press stands waist high and needs two people, while this sits on a bench and can be worked by one.

The construction is the interesting part. The basket is built from separate wooden staves held in an iron cage, so juice runs out between them under pressure and the whole thing comes apart for cleaning. The screw is hand-cut, the crossbar is drilled to take a lever, and the feet are splayed to stop it walking across the bench under load. Everything about it was designed to be repaired rather than replaced.

As an object in a room it does two things at once: it has real mass, and it has an obvious mechanical logic that draws the eye. It works as a hall piece, as a plant stand on a covered terrace, or simply as the thing on the end of a kitchen island that people ask about. Keep it dry and out of direct sun; the timber has already given up most of its moisture and does not need any more drying.

A press this size is a two-person lift and it ships crated rather than boxed. If you would prefer to collect, we can hold it at the warehouse and you are welcome to look it over first — with something mechanical, most people want to turn the screw once before committing. We do not sell presses as food-safe equipment; if you intend to actually press fruit, plan on replacing the staves.
