What We Look For

The Warped Table is a buying operation before it is a shop. Most weeks one of us is out on the road — estate sales, barn clearances, country auctions, the fairs listed on our show schedule — looking at several hundred objects in order to bring back a couple of dozen. Nothing arrives here because it photographs well. It arrives because it was built for a job, survived doing it, and still reads clearly as the thing it was made to be.

That rule does a lot of work. It rules out the enormous secondary market in aged reproductions, where a new bucket is tumbled and sprayed to look like a hundred-year-old one. It rules out pieces that have been stripped and refinished, because the finish is usually the only evidence a piece has left. And it rules out anything structurally past saving — a bench with a split seat, a bucket rusted through at the base, a pot cracked by frost. What we cannot make sound, we leave where we found it.

What we do not do is improve things. Galvanised steel comes to you dented and dulled to a soft pewter. Enamel is chipped down to the base metal along the rim, which is where every enamelled bucket in Europe chips. Carved bowls keep the ridges of the gouge on the inside and the sun-bleached grey the outside took decades to acquire. Old French glass keeps its bloom. We clean, we check handles and joints, we replace a missing leg wedge in oak — and then we stop.

The collections are organised by the way pieces behave in a room rather than by period. Farm House Collections is the working metal and timber: buckets, feeders, moulds, presses. Vintage Inspired holds the quieter domestic material — carved bowls, preserve jars, glazed pots, painted panels. Local Pick Up Only is for the furniture that is too heavy or too fragile to trust to a carrier, and which you are welcome to come and look at properly before deciding.

Almost everything is one of a kind, so what you see is a snapshot of the current stock rather than a standing catalogue. If you are after something specific — a matched pair of buckets, a bench of a particular length, a bowl of a particular size — tell us through the contact page and we will keep it in mind on the next trip. We would rather find you the right piece in three months than sell you an approximate one today.
